In All the President's Men, the 1976 movie based on the Watergate scandal, Deep Throat tells Bob Woodward to 'follow the money'. After 9/11, terrorism was constricted by drying up its funding. That has resulted in ordinary people like you and me having to do myriad things like KYC and PAN, even when we have to buy a 10000 rupees mutual fund. But drying up the funds flow is a sure shot to weaken an enterprise.

 

In this superb revenge movie, Mohan Kumar approaches Puri (whom he had saved in a prison fight) for help, to extract revenge from the troika of villains. He says,

 

"Yeh teen alag alag aadmii nahee.n hain, teen sar.on waalaa ek raakshas hai...

un teen saro.n waale rakshas se,  main laDoonga

 

Puri agrees to help him. He says,

 

"Theek hai, agar tum yahi chaahte ho to. lekin ye laDaai tumhe jazbaat se nahee.n, aql se laDni hogi.

kyonki dushman tumse, mujhse kahee.n zyaadaa taaqatvar hai"

 

And Mohan Kumar comes up with this classic line.

 

"sabse pehle mujhe us taaqat ko khatm karna hoga. Pehle sone ki Lanka jalegi, uske baad RaavaN maara jaayega"

"सबसे पहले मुझे उस ताक़त को ख़त्म करना होगा. पहले सोने की लंका जलेगी, उसके बाद रावण मारा जाएगा"

 

After that, nemesis strikes the troika of villains.

Meree samajh meN ye naheeN aataa ki tum kameene zyaadaa ho, yaa bewaqoof

Portions of this scene have been featured earlier too. Mohan breaks into Balwant's house and is waiting for him, with a minatory motive. Balwant manages to find his revolver and points it at Mohan. Mohan suggests that he has already removed all the bullets from the revolver (he shows him six bullets). His logic is that - he would not have come and ensconced himself in a villain's lair and not sanitised it for arms and ammunition. Mohan uses the power of dialogue to sell his story

"मेरी समझ मे ये नहीं आता कि तुम कमीने ज़्यादा हो, या बेवक़ूफ"

"Meree samajh me ye naheeN aataa ki tum kameene zyaadaa ho, yaa bewaqoof"

Balwant falls for the power of the dialogue (and so do we) and drops the revolver. Mohan picks it up and we discover that the revolver is actually loaded. Leaving us wondering, whether Mohan was more 'kameenaa' or more 'bewaqoof', for having left him exposed to such a risk.

Anyways all well that ends well. Balwant dies under the wheels of an oncoming truck, prompting Mohan to remark - ....

Aadmi kaa agar iraadaa pakkaa ho to darwaaze to khud ba khud khul jaate hain

This revenge drama has Mohan breaking into Balwant's house. Balwant asks him the silly but inevitable question

"Tum andar kaise aaye"

And Mr Mohan Kumar says

"Aadmi kaa iraadaa pakkaa ho to darwaaze to khud ba khud khul jaate haiN"

"आदमी का इरादा पक्का हो तो दरवाज़े तो ख़ुद ब ख़ुद खुल जाते हैं"

A thought echoed, in a slightly romantic fashion, by Shri Shahrukh Khan in his Om Shanti Om, when he says

"इतनी शिद्दत से मैने तुम्हे पाने की कोशिश की है, कि हर ज़र्रे ने तुम्हे मुझसे मिलाने की साज़िश की है"

Personally, I too feel that if one really wants to do something, he generally does it. Simple line, but interesting usage. So you can use this line, when you break into someone's house.

Balwant samajh rahaa thaa ki maut uske peechhe aa rahee hai. Lekin maut uske aage thee

This is a line which I thought of long long back. It is a line which I have used many times that I have lost count. But since I am very particular about putting in the exact words on the blog, I had to wait for a while before I could post this.

Well this is from the film Duniya. It is a pretty standard revenge drama (A Count of Monte Cristo –ish film). Mohan Kumar (Dilip Kumar) comes back from prison and exacts revenge upon the three main villains – Prem Chopra, Pran and Amrish Puri. Balwant Singh (Amrish Puri) is running away from Mohan Kumar. Mohan chases him. The chase spills onto the streets. So you have Balwant weaving through crowd and traffic, Mohan in hot pursuit. Balwant constantly keeps looking back, keeping an eagle eye for Mohan. Suddenly he is run over by an approaching truck.

Later Mohan goes to JK (Pran) and tells him that it was an accident. Of course Mohan has a special way of saying this

Balwant samajh rahaa thaa ki maut uske peechhe aa rahee hai. Lekin maut uske aage thee. Accident ho gayaa. Yeh koee hairat kee baat to hai nahee. BarsoN pehle tumne khud hee kahaa thaa – saDakoN par to accident hote hee rehte haiN

बलवंत समझ रहा था कि मौत उसके पीछे आ रही है. लेकिन मौत उसके आगे थी. ऍक्सिडेंट हो गया. ये कोई हैरत की बात तो है नहीं. बरसों पहले तुमने ख़ुद ही कहा था – सड़कों पर तो ऍक्सिडेंट होते ही रहते हैं

How many times does it happen that you are constantly watching one source of trouble and you get hit by another. Just like that – out of the blue. Every such time, you could say

वो समझ रहा था कि मौत उसके पीछे आ रही है, लेकिन मौत उसके आगे थी
A variant of this could be

मै समझ रहा था कि मौत मेरे पीछे आ रही है, लेकिन मौत मेरे आगे थी
On a different note, one story which probably captures the essence of this line very well is RK Laxman’s (yes Laxman not Narayan) short story – The Gold Frame.

This is another line from the 1984 movie Duniya. Jugal Kishore aka JK (Pran) is the chief villain in the film. He is told that one of his trucks containing contraband goods has been captured by the police. He suspects one of his men. His aide protests and says they are all old hands. Pran retorts with
दुनिया में ऐसा कोई क़ानून नहीं है कि पुराना आदमी ग़द्दारी नही कर सकता
We all find solace in dealing with people we know. Often we meet an old friend from college and start trusting him from the word go. It is possible that he might have changed from the way he was in college. But it seems impossible to us because we are very comfortable with that person. Higher desires and ambitions might have completely changed the person. But the ‘puraanaa aadmii’ syndrome is rampant even in corporate India. I know you for 6 years and I know another person for 8 years. I think I will deal with the other person, since I know him longer. If such a situation confronts you, remember this line by Pran

Bazaar mein patthar uchhaal deejiye to zyaadaatar chance yeh hai, ki kisee ravi ke sir pe hee giregaa patthar

Time for some self-indulgence. Ravi is a very common Indian name. And this line does bring the extent of commonness of the name home. This is from one of Javed Akhtar's initial films after his breakup with Salim Khan. You do get some flavour of Salim Javed, but you also feel that the entire 70s was when that couple was on its 'उरूज' or zenith.

The movie being referred to here is the 1984 movie Duniya. Ravi Kumar (Rishi Kapoor was actually called that in this film he he he) goes into a swanky restaurant where Mohan Kumar (Dilip Kumar) has a luncheon date with his friend's daughter Roma (Amrita Singh). He has sights on Roma's purse which he knows contains Rs 10000 in cash. While Roma is waiting in the restaurant for Mohan, Ravi goes in and starts working his charm on her. When Mohan comes in, Roma introduces him to Ravi. Mohan meets him warmly and remarks that he too once knew a Ravi (a reference to the fact that his son was also called Ravi). Our hero Ravi remarks

"जी हां सर ये बात मैने भी नोट की है. कि दुनिया में रवि नाम के इंसान कुछ ज़्यादा ही हैं. अब तो हाल ये है कि अगर आप बाज़ार में पत्थर उछाल दीजिये, तो ज़्यादातर चांस ये है, कि किसी रवि के सर पर ही गिरेगा पत्थर"

"Jee haan sir yeh baat maine bhee note kee hai. Ki duniyaa mein ravi naam ke insaan kuchh zyaadaa hee hain. Ab to haal yeh hai ki agar aap bazaar mein patthar uchhaal deejiye, to zyaadatar chance yeh hai ki kisee ravi ke sir pe hee giregaa patthar"

So if you happen to be a Ravi and face a comment like 'oh I knew so and so; he was also called Ravi", use this. Alternatively you could use this to rib any of your friends or colleagues called Ravi. And if you don't know anyone called Ravi, you have a very sad life.
