उड़द पर सफ़ेदी जितना uRad par safedi jitnaa

Film: Pukar
Year of release: 1939
Spoken by: Sangram Singh's daughter (Unknown)
Spoken to: Sangram Singh (Sohrab Modi)
Dialogue writer: Kamal Amrohi

Sangram Singh requests his daughter to sew his cloak (giriibaan ka tukmaa or button loop of opening of the cloak). As she sews it, he complains to her about his wife (her mother). His wife had helped his son (a fugitive from law) escape from his house. He was miffed with her favouring the son over the husband. The daughter tries to stand up for her mother and says,
"maa ko apni aulaad se bahut zyaadaa pyaar hota hai”
Sangram asks “aur baap ko nahiin hotaa?”
“hotaa hai, uRad par safedi jitnaa”
"होता है, उड़द पर सफ़ेदी जितना"

There is an idiom in hindi – uRad par safedi baraabar bhi sharm na honaa. Which means having no shame at all. I used to wonder what it meant because as a kid the only uRad (a type of pulse common in India) I had seen was completely white. It's only later that I realised that uRad is basically black and the white variety that I was seeing was the 'dhuli' or the skinned variety. Hence there is hardly any white visible in a heap of uRad. However if you take the dhuli variety, there is only white visible. Hence this idiom (and hence this dialogue) is relevant only for the whole uRad (the unskinned variety).

jo zabaan unke saamne mohabbat ka iqraar tak naa kar sakii ho, vo inkaar kaise karegi!

Film: Mughal E Azam
Year of release: 1960
Spoken by: Anarkali (Madhubala)
Spoken to: Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor)
Dialogue writer: Aman, Wajahat Mirza, Kamal Amrohi, Ehsan Rizvi

Akbar has incarcerated Anarkali and tries to make another attempt to intimidate her into letting go of her dalliance with Salim. Anarkali is brought before him bedecked in chains and manacles.  Akbar tells her that she will have to forget Salim.
"Tujhe salim ko bhoolna hoga..."
She asks,
"bhoolna hoga?"
He thunders,
"Yaqeenan...Aur sirf itnaa hi nahin... use ye bhi yaqiin dilaanaa hogaa.. ki tujhe usse kabhi mohabbat nahin thi"
A wistful Anarkali says,
"jo zabaan unke saamne mohabbat ka iqraar tak naa kar sakii ho, vo inkaar kaise karegi!"
"जो ज़बान उनके सामने मोहब्बत का इक़रार तक ना कर सकी हो, वो इनकार कैसे करेगी!"

What a lovely line! It's when I post lines like this that I feel that my blog is worth the effort.

jo insaan aKhlaaq ke daayare se nikal jaaye, use duniyaa kee had se bhii baahar nikal jaanaa chaahiye

Film : Pukar
Year of release : 1939
Spoken by : Jahaangiir (Chandramohan)
Spoken to : A murder accused (Unknown)
Dialogue writer : Syed Ameer Haider 'Kamal' (later known as Kamal Amrohi)

This is the first of the famous historical trilogy made by Sohrab Modi's Minerva Movietone. Set in Jahaangiir's time, the film begins with reference to the Jahaangiir's system of justice. Anyone in his kingdom with a complaint can come and ring the bell hanging at the palace gate. The king would come out and dispense justice.

A man carrying a dead body on his shoulders comes and rings the bell. The person who is being accused of murder is also present with his family. Jahaangiir comes out and asks the man what is the matter. The man says that Jahaangiir immediately comes to a decision and passes judgment thus

"tumne maa badaulat kee riyaayaa ke chain par haath Daalaa? tumne hamaarii hukoomat kee saaKh pe choT kee? tumne ek insaan kaa Khoon kiyaa? tum gardan maar dene ke laayaq ho! jo insaan aKhlaaq ke daayare se nikal jaaye,  use duniyaa kee had se bhii baahar nikal jaanaa chaahiye"
जो इंसान अख़लाक़ के दायरे से निकल जाये, उसे दुनिया की हद से भी बाहर निकल जाना चाहिये.

Any one who moves out of the realm of morality and politeness, should also move out of the realm of existence. He then orders the execution of the accused. With this logic, in one fell swoop Jahaangiir has got rid of the entire population of Delhi (and probably the entire world too, but most certainly Delhi).

When the sentenced man's wife (Jillo) asks the emperor "mere suhaag ne kyaa Khataa kii hai, use kyo.n sazaa mil rahee hai?" (why should my matrimonial life pay the price for this?)

The emperor says

"koii Khataa nahee.n ki, lekin mallaah kee Galati naao.n ke saare musaafiro.n ko le Doobtii hai. jaan ke badle jaan. yahii jahaangiir kaa insaaf hai. taameel ho"
