partner ab bol hee diyaa hai to dekh lenge

I have been meaning to put this on this blog for a long time. But then, the entire screenplay of films like Deewar and Sholay will walk into this blog.

However, this line has often been used by me. I was recently working with a colleague. We both had committed to completing a lot of work, and she voiced her concern about having bitten off more than we could chew. I responded with this classic line, she instantly cracked up laughing. Sometimes these film line references go abegging, when the interlocutor does not understand the reference. But this line did not suffer that fate.

But the triggering cue for finally putting this line up came recently after the fifth match of the India Sri Lanka test series.
India had wrapped up the series 5-0. Sarandeep Singh and Vivek Razdan were commentating along with Narottam Puri on DD National (don't ask me why I was watching that!). Narottam Puri asked Sarandeep as to what India's chances were in Australia. Sarandeep predicted that we would win all the one dayers there. Then he paused and looked at Vivek. Then he said.
"main kuchh zyaadaa to nahii.n bol gayaa"

Lo and behold! Vivek responded with this very line. "तब रोक न पाया मैं आंसू" as Amitabh's father would have said. And then I had to put this up.

This is from the first reel of Sholay. Thakur is a policeman and escorting the two convicts in a train. They get into a discussion about whose job is better. Veeru suggests that both Jai-Veeru and Thakur work for the same thing - money. Thakur refutes that and says, he works to uphold the law, whereas Jai-Veeru break it. Jai interrupts with his trademark style line -

"aur dono.n hee kaamo.n me.n,  bahaaduri kee zaroorat hotii hai"
Veeru backs that up with
"haa.n hotii hai"
achchhaa... tum apne aap ko bahut bahaadur samajhte ho
agar mauqaa mile, to dekh lenaa thaanedaar saahab, ham dono.n pandrah bees par to bhaari paRenge...kyo.n jai, mai.n zyaadaa to nahiin bol gayaa naa

jii woh english me.n kuchh naam rakhnaa chaahte the

I love Hindi film dialogues which have reference to the English language. I was reading Chetan Bhagat's extremely avoidable Revolution 2020. There was a sequence where the politician is looking for a name for his engineering college. He says it should have a touch of tradition, as well as sound modern. They decide on the name "Gangatech". I recently saw the board of a school called St. National. In this mindset,  I discovered this gem from Mr India.

This is Anil Kapoor's introductory scene from the film. He is shown cooking in the kitchen and calling out to his cook Calendar in the same breath. When Calendar finally wakes from his slumber and responds to Arun, Arun asks, 

"ek to merii samajh me.n aaj tak ye nahee.n aayaa, ki tumharaa naam tumhaare  maa baap ne calendar kyo.n rakhaa"
"एक तो मेरी समझ में आज तक ये नहीं आया, कि तुम्हारा नाम तुम्हारे मां बाप ने कॅलंडर क्यों रखा"

jii woh english me.n kuchh naam rakhnaa chaahte the. 
जी वो इंग्लिश में कुछ नाम रखना चाहते थे "

Look around you at names of shops, schools and organisations. This innocent desire of ordinary Indians will manifest itself all around you.

jii mai.n maange ke kapDo.n me.n hameshaa achchhii lagtii hoo.n

Another Salim-Javed gem. Makes it a Salim Javed double bill so to speak. This is the female version of Ram aur Shyam and the confident sister - Geeta is now with Ravi. Ravi had earlier gone to meet Seeta (literally the poor cousin) and her family in connection with a possible alliance and had come back disappointed. He now believes Geeta is the same girl. And takes her home. Geeta is wearing a gypsy dress and hence he asks her to wear something more appropriate -  from his sister's wardrobe. She emerges looking stunning. Ravi tells his parents that  what they saw the other day was a charade and Seeta's guardians actually mistreat her.  The parents are shocked and obviously approve of Seeta's (Geeta's) new look. Ravi's mother (Ratnamala) says

"main to kehtii hoo.n, mujhe to nafrat ho gayee hai un logo.n se. us din kis huliye me.n ise hamaare saamane laaye the.aur aaj dekho, kaisee achchhee lagtee hai. "
"मैं तो कहती हूं, मुझे तो नफ़रत हो गयी है उन लोगों से. उस दिन किस हुलिये में इसे हमारे सामने लाये थे. और आज देखो, कैसी अच्छी लगती है."

Different people respond in different ways to compliments. And Geeta responds with this good natured and rather naive remark,

"jii mai.n maange ke kapDo.n me.n hameshaa achchhii lagtii hoo.n"
"जी मैं मांगे के कपडों में हमेशा अच्छी लगती हूं"

So if you are used to borrowing clothes, you can use this line. I can't. Nobody in this world is my size!

lekin kaam kuchh aisaa hai, ki mujhe aise hee aadmiyo.n kee zaroorat hai

I have always held that the entire screenplay of Sholay would walk into this blog. This is a classic line for an HR person writing a JD, or a line manager asking for a particular type of candidate. Because sometimes even in hardcore corporate jobs, unconventional people are required. 

This is the opening sequence of this great movie which will soon be released in 3D. I hope they do a good job technically. This is a film that deserves to be remade, recreated, digitally enhanced, etc etc etc. 

Thakur asks Ramlal to show a photo to the jailor and asks him if he recognises the men in the photo.

"inhe.n pehchaante hai.n aap?"

The Jailor responds with,

"Thakur sahab shayad hee koee aisaa jail ho, jisme.n ye dono.n naa gaye ho.n. ye veeru hai aur ye jaidev. dono.n ke dono.n pakke badmaash. ek nambar ke chor. chha.nTe hue GunDe hai.n"

Then with a sigh, Thakur comes up with this gem,

"jaantaa hoo.n lekin kaam kuchh aisaa hai, ki mujhe aise hee aadmiyo.n kee zaroorat hai"
"जानता हूं, लेकिन काम कुछ ऐसा है, कि मुझे ऐसे ही आदमियों की ज़रूरत है"

The discussion continues with the jailor saying that he does not know what kind of job he wants them for, but they are rotten to the core. Or as he puts it, 

"khoTaa sikkaa to dono.n hee taraF se khoTaa hotaa hai"

Thakur comes up with another gem,


"sikke aur insaan me.n shaayad yahee farq hai"
"सिक्के और इंसान में शायद यही फ़र्क़ है"

mujhe laDkiyo.n ke dil se koee dilchaspii nahee.n, isiiliye to aaj tak zindaa hoo.n

This line comes in the scene just before the song "Yeh mera dil". The 2006 version dropped this line while retaining the earlier, 'romantic baate.n mujhe bahut bore kartee hai.n' line. So I thought I might bring up this line up. Ideal time. Valentine season!

Sonia (Kamini) responds to Don's 'romantic baate.n' jibe with this line -

"insaan ye jaan saktaa hai ki chaand aur sooraj me.n kyaa chhupaa hai, lekin ye kabhii naheen jaan saktaa, ki ek laDkii ke dil me.n kyaa chhupaa hai."

Don continues in his laconic way, with this line -

"mujhe laDkiyon ke dil se koee dilchaspii nahee.n, iseeliye to aaj tak zindaa hoo.n....  oh god getting late."

"मुझे लडकियों के दिल से कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं, इसीलिये तो आज तक ज़िन्दा हूं"

aur main koee vaalmiki to naheeN jo Daake chhoDe haiN to ramayan likh dii

It was Vaalmiki Jayanti yesterday. You would have faced a lot of traffic jams if you were in Delhi yesterday. Reminded me of this Salim Javed line that I have been planning to post for a while. Vaalmiki was of course famous for having written the epic Ramayan. But the other famous fact about him was that he was a highwayman who used to rob and kill travellers. He later (after a chance encounter with Narada) reforms and gives up robbery and takes to writing. When I see the kind of advances paid to ordinary writers these days, I can understand the thought behind this career switch. :)

The film is called Haath Ki Safaai and Shankar plays a crook in the film. Kamini is running away from Shankar when she realises that he is a crook and while trying to hide from his men and him, she goes and seeks refuge in his house without realising it. Shankar's wife Roma (Simi Garewal) sees a woman in distress and agrees to give her refuge. But very soon Kamini sees a large framed photo of Shankar in the hall and without realising that she could have walked into the wrongest house possible, she blurts out to Roma that the man in the photo is a goon. Roma refuses to believe and asks her to leave the house. As Kamini leaves the house, she is chased by Shankar and just as Shankar is about to get to Kamini, Roma (who must have been quietly following them) steps in and confronts Shankar. However, the strain of the situation is too much for Roma and she faints. Kamini helps Shankar to tend to Roma, till she has stabilised.

Later when Shankar sees that Kamini is still in the house, he apologises to her. He says,
"kaamini, maine jo tumhaare saath ab tak sulooq kiyaa hai tum... Khair, maafii maangnee to bahut aasaan hai, aur mai.n koii vaalmiiki to nahee.n, jo Daake chhoDe hai.n to raamaayaN likh dee. Romaa ne tumhe.n is ghar me.n panaah dii hai, jab tak tum chaaho, yahaa.n rah saktee ho. "
"कामिनी, मैंने जो तुम्हारे साथ अब तक सुलूक़ किया है, तुम...ख़ैर, माफ़ी मांगनी तो बहुत आसान है, और मैं कोई वाल्मीकि तो नहीं, जो डाके छोडे हैं तो रामायण लिख दी. रोमा ने तुम्हें इस घर में पनाह दी है, जब तक तुम चाहो, यहां रह सकती हो."

Now this situation is not all that great. But I quite like the line. The point being made is that it is not so easy for everyone to walk on the path of reform. Society might not be so kind to you. It might not give you another chance easily. Imagine a typical HR executive interviewing Valmiki.

"Well I see from your CV, that you have been a highwayman. And now you want to be a writer. How do you explain that?"

And the interview would have ended with the inevitable "We will get back to you". :)

If HR guys had been around then, we might not have had any RaamayaN.

Jo pachchees baras me.n nahee.n huaa woh ab hogaa

The coolies of the dockyard are sitting and sipping tea in the canteen. Rahim is very concerned about Vijay's act of defiance in refusing to pay protection money (hafta). He says

yahaa.n Gareeb ko sau baate.n soch ke chalnaa paDtaa hai. aur phir ye log to mawaalii Thahare, inke munh kaun lage
यहाँ ग़रीब को सौ बातें सोच के चलना पडता है, और फिर ये लोग तो मवाली ठहरे, इनके मुंह कौन लगे. 

Another coolie eggs him on with this line,

Theek kehte ho raheem chacha bilkul Theek kehte ho
ठीक केहते हो रहीम चाचा बिलकुल ठीक कहते हो.

Suitably encouraged, Raheem continues his litany.

pachchees baras ho gaye hame.n yahaa.n kaam karte. hamane nahee.n dekhaa koee kulee unhe.n haftaa dene se inkaar kar de
पच्चीस बरस हो गये हमें यहाँ काम करते. हमने नहीं देखा कोई कुली उन्हें हफ़्ता देने से इनकार कर दे.

And the laconic Vijay pauses for a while and then says sententiously,

raheem chaacha jo pachchees baras me.n nahee.n huaa woh ab hogaa. agale hafte ek aur kuli in mawaaliyo.n ko paisaa dene se inkaar karne vaalaa hai. 
रहीम चाचा, जो पच्चीस बरस में नहीं हुआ वो अब होगा. अगले हफ़्ते एक और कुली इन मवालियों को पैसा देने से इनकार करने वाला है.

This is the line which later gives rise to  the "Peter ab ye taalaa mai.n terii jeb se chaabee nikaal ke..." line. But that line will come in some other post.

So when India wins the cricket World Cup after 28 years, the Left front loses Bengal after 34 years, and there is history being made all around. This is a great line to use. 

Remember the Emirates line - when was the last time you did something for the first time. So whenever you do that, use this line.

Main aaj kal kamaal kar rahee hoon

I try and avoid Salim-Javed, but it is hard to do that. What a body of work they have!
More of matter and less of art. This line is from the 1978 Yash Chopra classic Trishul. Probably one of the earliest corporate warfare movies in Hindi cinema. Vijay Kumar (Amitabh Bachchan) is the illegitimate son of Raj Kumar Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar) and Shanti Devi (Waheeda Rehman). Vijay grows up with a burning desire to right the wrongs - perceived and real - done to his mother. After his mother's death, Vijay sets himself up as a builder who challenges the might of M/s RK Gupta. One of R K Gupta's employees - the very efficient Geeta (Raakhee Gulzar) - is fired by R K Gupta. He is under the impression that she has been passing vital information to Vijay. Although the misunderstanding is cleared up (in fact by Vijay himself in a dramatic moment), Geeta still decides to part ways with RK Gupta. Post her separation, she meets Vijay in a five star hotel coffee shop. Vijay starts the conversation with

"Geeta mujhe tumse kuchh kaam hai. isiiliye milnaa chaahtaa thaa. "
"aaj kal  kyaa kar rahee ho"
to which Raakhee responds with
"tumne sunaa hogaa, jo log kuchh nahee.n karte, kamaal karte hai.n. main aaj kal kamaal kar rahee hoo.n"
" तुमने सुना होगा, जो लोग कुछ नहीं करते, कमाल करते हैं. मैं आज कल कमाल कर रही हूं"

I haven't found a better description by lotus-eaters of their vocation. Nick Nolte came close in the Three Fugitives (1989) when he said "I am in between jobs". But this is really interesting. More so probably because it is in Hindi.
Literally it means "I am doing wonderfully well these days". But it would actually mean that you are doing nothing - simbly sitting idle (sic). So go ahead, when you do not have any work to do and someone asks you what you are doing, tell them
"मैं आज कल कमाल कर रहा/रही हूं"
Conversely, do not say "main kamaal kar rahaa hoon" unless you are implying that you are doing nothing. We live in strange times - all communication is strangely layered.

The first post - Main aaj bhee phenke huye paise naheeN uThaataa

Well time to get cracking with the posts. Here goes the first installment

"Main aaj bhee phenke huye paise naheeN uThaataa"
"में आज भी फेंके हुए पैसे नहीं उठाता"

Film: Deewar

Spoken to: Mulkraj Dawar (Iftekhar)

What this line literally means is - I still do not pick up money that is thrown at me". The background is that the character Vijay worked as a shoeshine boy outside the race course as a kid. One of the patrons of the race course was a local smuggler - Mulk raj Dawar. He used to stop by to get his shoes shined. One such day when his associate tosses a fifty paisa coin at the shoeshine boy after getting his shoes shined; the boy refuses to pick up the coin and insists that the money be handed over to him in a more respectful manner. (Saab, ham booT polish kartaa hai, koi bhiikh nahii.n maangtaa. paise uThaa kar haath me.n do) Years later, when Vijay first starts working with Dawar, he offers him some money as a sort of sign-on bonus. He tosses the wad of notes onto a table. Vijay retorts with the line which is featured here.

The proverbial value of this is that it can be used in any situation - whether in corporate world or as a freelancer - when the payment is made in a manner not consonant with the dignity that ought to be accorded to the service rendered. Of course, it might have to be amended slightly as
"Main phenke huye paise naheeN uThaataa"
"में फेंके हुए पैसे नहीं उठाता"
