Rana wants to kidnap his rival gang lord DK's brother Shakti Kapoor. He decides to use the honeytrap for this, since Shakti is fond of beautiful women. Jai (Govinda) suggests that his girl friend Jyoti be used for this purpose (what a cad!). Rana agrees, though with some reservations.

Once the job is done, Rana turns to Jyoti and says,

"ab hum...tumhaare qarzdaar hai.n laDkii. aur yaad rahe... Rana qarz aur farz donon ko...ek hi nazar se nibhaataa hai".
"अब हम...तुम्हारे क़र्ज़दार हैं लड़की. और याद रहे... राणा क़र्ज़ और फ़र्ज़ दोनों को...एक ही नज़र से निभाता है."

DK (Om Puri) diverts a consignment of contraband that belongs to Rana. When Rana gets to hear the news, he grows angry and says,

"shaayad... DK jaantaa nahiin ki Rana ki shatranj ka ghoRaa, aRhaai chaal nahii.n chaltaa, seedhe raajaa ko maartaa hai"

"शायद...डी के जानता  नहीं कि राणा की शतरंज का घोड़ा, अढ़ाई चाल नहीं चलता, सीधे राजा को मारता है"

This is one level higher than this action, described elsewhere on this blog.

SI Rane (Raaj Kumar) wants to arrest PC Mathur (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) for his crimes. DCP Lal is trying to dissuade him from doing so, by telling him about the extent of Mathur's influence.

"Seva, aadarsh, deshbhakti ki bhaavna ko, kisi puraani band kitaab ki tarah...apni library mein sambhaal kar rakhnaa. Aur apne bachchon ko paDhaanaa, sirf paDhaana, sikhaanaa nahiin, varna unke bachche, daane daane ko mohtaaj ho jaayenge."
"सेवा, आदर्श, देशभक्ति की भावना को, किसी पुरानी बंद किताब की तरह... अपनी लाइब्रेरी में संभाल कर रखना. और अपने बच्चों को पढ़ाना, सिर्फ़ पढ़ाना, सिखाना नहीं. वर्ना उनके बच्चे, दाने दाने को मोहताज हो जायेंगे."

SI Rane of course gives a bombastic response, but I liked this line better. Iftekhar rarely plays a policeman in a negative shade.

There is a beautiful word in English called braggadocio. It means boastful or arrogant behaviour. Now the one actor who comes to your mind, the moment I explained the word will have to be Raaj Kumar. His dialogues oozed with braggadocio. And if you ever choose to do the same, do emulate his lines as well. A pipe in one hand and a resignation letter in your pocket are also necessary accoutrements for emulating Raaj Kumar (as he himself mentioned in the movie Surya). 

This is the opening scene of the movie, where the character of Rana is being established on screen. So he just steps into a court and looks at the judge and forces him to rescind his death sentence into acquittal (yes you read that right). Then he comes home and finds an old woman praising him to the skies for being the reason his daughter has now found a husband. Then another man with a crutch praises him to the skies and tells his son that Rana is the reason he was able to complete his B.Sc. Rana immediately arranges a job for him. That too is an interesting dialogue. But that's another story.

Then he is told that Govardhan Seth is waiting for him in the conference room. He goes and sits in the conference room.
"muaamlaa kyaa hai?"
"maamlaa to sirf pachchees laakh rupaye ka hai Rana Sahab, lekin jo aadmi hazm kar gaya hai, wo hai Sonu badmaash dada (Tej Sapru)"

"daadaa to is duniya men bas do hain. Ek ooparwaala... aur doosre ham. Bolo baat kyaa hai."

"दादा तो इस दुनिया में बस दो हैं. एक ऊपरवाला ...और दूसरे हम"

mujhe to koi beemaari naheen hai. phir bhee barson se mujh par yehii ilaaj chal rahaa hai

I love Hindi film dialogues which have reference to the English language. I was reading Chetan Bhagat's extremely avoidable Revolution 2020. There was a sequence where the politician is looking for a name for his engineering college. He says it should have a touch of tradition, as well as sound modern. They decide on the name "Gangatech". I recently saw the board of a school called St. National. In this mindset,  I discovered this gem from Mr India.

This is Anil Kapoor's introductory scene from the film. He is shown cooking in the kitchen and calling out to his cook Calendar in the same breath. When Calendar finally wakes from his slumber and responds to Arun, Arun asks, 

"ek to merii samajh me.n aaj tak ye nahee.n aayaa, ki tumharaa naam tumhaare  maa baap ne calendar kyo.n rakhaa"

"एक तो मेरी समझ में आज तक ये नहीं आया, कि तुम्हारा नाम तुम्हारे मां बाप ने कॅलंडर क्यों रखा"

jii woh english me.n kuchh naam rakhnaa chaahte the. 

जी वो इंग्लिश में कुछ नाम रखना चाहते थे "

Look around you at names of shops, schools and organisations. This innocent desire of ordinary Indians will manifest itself all around you.

Karamveer was an honest constable who arrests the local goon Kaali (Charan Raj) in a smuggling case. Kaali comes out and abducts Karamveer's wife. She is raped and murdered by Kaali. Karamveer loses his mental balance and becomes a mad cop who find solace in regulating the town's traffic. When Kaali announces his nomination for the election, Karamveer lands up at the election office to file his nomination. This is the exchange between him and the polling officer.

"main chunaav ladnaa chaahtaa hoon kaali ke khilaaf. ye rahee meri arzii."

Polling officer (PO) : "baahar jaao"

Karamveer : "kyun jaaoon?"

PO: "kyonki paagal chunaav naheen laD sakte"

Karamveer : "duniya kee har mahaan hasti ko logon ne pahle paagal hee samjhaa hai. aapki koi galati naheen hai . {PO pushes him at this point} dhakka mat maaro. agar main kal mantri ho gayaa to inheen haathon se salaam karnaa padega."

PO : "Prakaash havaldaar ko bulaao."

Karamveer : "haan bulaao bulaao woh to sab mere saathi hain."

Then he takes a pause and comes up with this great line. It left a great impression on me as a kid. Putting it up on this blog now.  

"ek baat bataaoo.n. aaj tak buddhimaan logo.n ne raaj kar ke janata ko hamesha paagal banaa diyaa hai. hain... hai naa? ab paanch saal ke liye paagalo.n ko hukumat karne deejiye. sirf paanch saal. phir dekho chaaro.n taraf shanti hee shaanti."

With non traditional options coming up on the Indian electoral front too, this can be a very convincing appeal for people to vote for them (if all else fails) :).

I am always on the look out for Raj Kumar dialogues. The man bought some serious personality into his lines. This is a scene from one of his later and lesser known films.

DK's minion is on the line with Rana. Rana refuses to talk to him. He says,

"hum kutto.n se baat nahee.n karte"

DK snatches the receiver from his minion and roars (in typical Om Puri style)

"sher ki dahaaD to pahchaante ho naa Rana?"

Rana comes up with this riposte (in classic Raj Kumar style)

"DK boTiyaa.n nochne waalaa geedaDh, galaa phaaDne se sher nahee.n ban jaataa"

Baandra ka bhaav bolo baap landan kaa nahee.n

There is a plethora of malls in and around Delhi now. In fact they are there all over India. Every luxury international brand is freely available in India now. However, most visitors end up not even window shopping at these shops (with the kind of names these shops have). The reason could be that they would have walked in to ask the price of an innocent looking hand bag with a name that sounds like सूई खींचों and would have been told that this 8x6 inch handbag costs 1.3 lac rupees. Their gut reaction would be what this character said 24 years ago. But these shops flourish because there are many in this country who don't mind paying that kind of money. But we'll let all that be. 

Kapil is an inspector who has vowed to rid Goa of its drug culture. Ostensibly, he failed or else we might not have seen the film Dum Maaro Dum this year. This film was inspired from the Eddie Murphy flick The Beverly Hills Cop and saw the arthouse Naseer crossover to commercial cinema after pumping some serious iron. 

Kapil goes to a drug dealer in disguise - as a handicapped old man. The dealer can't resist taking a shot at his age. He tells the dealer

"dekho saahab maskharii nahee.n. bhaav bolo bhaav bolo. "

The dealer says,

"ram kaa bees rupaye kvaarter. shyaam kaa das rupayaa."

Kapil acts surprised. And then comes up with this classic line, which you can use with the mall guys when they quote their rates. 

"brown sugar kaa das rupaya! are bandra ka bhaav bolo baap landan kaa nahee.n"

"ब्राउन शुगर का दस रुपया! अरे बान्द्रा का भाव बोलो बाप लन्दन का नहीं" 

If you are in Delhi, you can use Sadar Bazaar instead of Bandra.

The idea for this post is courtesy a friend who remembered this line, after he had to pay a reasonably heavy bill at a restaurant. I think he wanted to use this line with the waiter, but unfortunately he ended up leaving a tip on top of the billed amount. :)
