jab tak manushya jeeta hai...

Film: Chitralekha
Year of release : 1964
Spoken by : Chitralekha (Meena Kumari)
Spoken to : Kumaragiri (Ashok Kumar)
Dialogue writer : Kidar Sharma

Chitralekha is based on Bhagvati Charan Verma's classic novel of the same name. Kidar Sharma liked it so much that he made it twice into a movie. The first time in 1941 and the result was a super hit. The second time he made it in 1964 and it was a disaster. Meena Kumari was supposed to be this seductive sexy courtesan - but she looked sick and unattractive. If it had been Vyjayanti Mala or Tanuja it might have worked better. But Kidar thought Meena Kumari's acting chops would carry the day. It did not work at the box office, but it is not a bad film.

The attractive courtesan Chitralekha is fond of all the attractive things in this world. Then she meets the ascetic Kumaragiri played by Ashok Kumar. She is used to men eyeing her lasciviously, lustfully. But here is an ascetic who looks at her with no desire. She is drawn to him instinctively, like Kareena is drawn to Hrithik in K3G (ye kaun hai jisne Poo ko muD ke nahin dekha). She is so taken in, that she turns into an ascetic to be with him.

But when she becomes an ascetic, Kumaragiri turns into a lustful lover. That's when she stops loving him. So this is a scene where Chitralekha is admonishing her guru who seems to be overcome with desire for her. She says,
"Gurudev, aapki pustak me.n paDhaa hai maine, aapne likha hai, jab tak manushya jeeta hai, icchhayen martii nahiin, dabaayi jaa saktii hain...ye aag dabii rahe to achchhaa hai Gurudev"
{Gurudev, I have read it in the book that you yourself have written, that man cannot conquer desire as long as he lives, he can only suppress them...it would be good if you keep your desires suppressed Gurudev}

The time stamp is 1 hour 52 minutes.
