Film : Hum Dono
Year of release : 1961
Spoken by : Mita's father (Gajanan Jagirdar)
Spoken to : Anand (Dev Anand)
This film is normally classified as 'Drama', but for me, this will always classify as 'Mystery'. Not for obvious reasons, but for the fact that the only good thing about this film was its music. What a classic score by Jaidev! And he never scored for a Navketan film after that. Ended up being relegated to an occasional composer till his death almost 3 decades later. That for me, will be one of the greatest mysteries. I wish I could go and ask Dev Anand that question.
On the topic of the scene, this is one of those typical rich father telling poor prospective groom about how the groom's one year's salary is less than the girl's one day's expense. So Anand goes to meet Mita (Sadhna - looking slightly less beautiful than she looked in Parakh - wonder what happened)'s father for the first time. And the inevitable happens. Anand tries to convince Mita's father that she can live on 'sookhii roTi' or dry bread. Mita's father scoffs at it and says
"jisne hameshaa pulaav khaayaa ho, use sookhii roTi me.n kavita nazar aatii hai"
"जिसने हमेशा पुलाव खाया हो, उसे सूखी रोटी में कविता नज़र आती है"
